Studio

Designer, London — furniture, lighting, spaces and small-run product.

Background

Andrew Haythornthwaite is a designer based in London, originally from rural New Zealand. He studied industrial design at Massey University in Wellington, then moved to Hong Kong, where he co-founded a design studio for the Knirps umbrella brand, before coming to London to study Design Products at the Royal College of Art under Ron Arad. He has been based in London ever since, with permanent works held in the Design Museum, London, and MoMA, New York.

Scope

The studio works across furniture, lighting, spaces and small-run product design, and takes work from first idea through to finished production. Andrew actively engages in the development and exploration of various making processes associated with experimental objects, staying hands-on from concept and prototyping through to the final piece. Drawing on observations in nature and employing straightforward mechanical processes, he incorporates these elements significantly into his conceptual works and commissioned projects.

Products

Selected pieces from the studio are available through Shop, including the Slugs and Tadpoles barware range — cast and finished by hand in stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper, and carbon steel.
