A range of tables and side tables built using surfboard construction — a shaped polystyrene core, pigment mixed into the resin, and a glass outer shell. The range was developed as a UK commission, through a sequence of prototypes and trials.

The pieces were made with Bill Atlee of Escape Surfboards, in Polzeath, Cornwall. The outer forms were CNC-cut; Atlee then hand-shaped the “rails” — the profiled edge of each top — to a section we had developed for the range.

Work was carried out in his shaping bay, using the same tools and process as the surfboards. Holding a consistent profile across the range is a matter of hand skill — accuracy judged by eye rather than set by a machine.

The colour range was mixed by hand on site, matched to a set of graphic references drawn up for the project. On some pieces, two pigments are combined in the resin to produce a two-tone surface.
